6:12 am
beating banser. throughout this morning you've been hearing from survivors but our next guest believes the conversation about breast cancer kneads to change -- needs breast cancer coalition and a 25-year breast cancer survivor. >> yes. >> congratulations on that, fran. >> thank you. >> you have said and this is a pretty provocative statement that october breast cancer awareness month may be hazardous to a woman's health. people would be surprised that as a survivor you're saying that. why? >> the message is often too simple. we try to reduce breast cancer to sound bite and breast cancer is a very complex issue and disease. we really haven't made a great deal of progress in breast cancer. we need to focus on that, be aware of that and figure out how to change it. >> what should the conversation be? we report on new treatments,
6:13 am
new technologies. what should we be saying in this conversation that's going to make a difference? >> we need to talk about how we can end breast cancer, how to stop women from getting breast cancer to begin with, how to stop the spread of breast cancer. primary breast cancer is not what kills women. it's the spread of breast cancer to other organs, ma metasis. stop women from getting it to begin with and stop them from dying. >> aren't we doing that? we're raising billions of dollars around the globe looking for the research that will lead to the treatment that will prevent this disease. >> actually we're not looking very much in terms of preventing breast cancer. primary proconvention. how do we intervene in a healthy population. so women do not have to worry about tossic drugs.
6:14 am
they don't have to worry about ma taste take sis. part of our deadline campaign, one of the two areas of focus is primary prevention. >> 2020 ised deadline you said -- is the deadline you said. is it achievable and what happens if we don't reach that on january 2, 2020? >> well, it is achievable. it's going to take a lot of hard work. it's not just the campaign. we have a blueprint and a plan of action on how to get there. we design add collaboration, brought together a collaboration to look at a preventive vaccine in cancer. we're looking at the issue of how to stop spreading. it's achievable. we need the conversation. we need everyone involved to focus on that deadline. we're just not going to accept failure. we already have accepted failure actually when you think about the fact that 40,000 women still die every year in this country alone of breast
6:15 am
cancer. 500,000 around the world. that is failure. so we need to figure out how to succeed. we need to figure out how to end breast cancer. >> fran visco says enough is enough. if you'd like more information on the 2020 deadline and the national breast cancer coalition focus, go to the web side blastcancerdeadline2020.org. thank you very much for being here with us. >> thank you very much. >> let's go to howard. we peeked outside on our way to work. plenty of rain to be had, at least on my drive. >> it's starting to move out slowly. looks like there's more south and east of d.c. north, northwest things are quieting down. not a pretty morning. we have the clouds and humidity and chilly temperatures. when it's cool and moist, you feel it a lot more than when it's cool and dry. a look at your bus stop forecast. there's a shower or two still out there, especially south and east. a chill as well. low 40s in the shenandoah valley. the low 50s along the bay, southern maryland, and we're in
6:16 am
the upper 40s here in d.c. our day planner we'll get into more sunshine later. still a lot of clouds around. 11:00 54. winds north 5, 10 miles an hour. 1:00 56. this afternoon as we see a little bit more sunshine, that should help boost temperatures to about 60, maybe 61 for the high. so winds still up north, northeast 5, 7, 8 miles an hour. showers have been persistent but over the last half-hour, starting to see a little bit of a push away from us. give it another couple of hours and we should be in a lot better shape. unfortunately the rush hour is under way. i'm encouraged as i zoom in on the live doppler, hardly anything falling across fairfax and montgomery counties. go have a few showers, light, light sprinkles. you see them coming through silver spring along colesville headed toward south of olney there on georgia avenue. southeastern prince george's county in towards southern anne arundel now, dunkirk, north beach, chesapeake beach hunting town, you'll see some of the
6:17 am
showers coming out of charles county, coming out of la plata as you go north and east. south of there, things are quieting down. yes, improving radar trends this morning with mid-40s in montgomery county, 47 bowie. 48 up in baltimore, bwi. mid-40s in fairfax county with 46 now in centreville. same in leesburg and also 46 for fort belvoir. outside on our michael & son weather camera, we see less moisture sitting on the cover of the camera. that's another sign that the rains have shut down and cloudy skies being reported at reagan national. 49 with a north wind at 8. feels more like 45 degrees out there. it is a raw morning. we've got this system on the east coast pulling away and this one in the plains heading toward us. you can see the twist right here in northern minnesota dragging a cold front across minnesota, iowa and wisconsin. that cold front gets here tomorrow afternoon. with it looks like most of the moisture is going to stay north of us but we do have a slight chance of a shower.
6:18 am

washington right now. but a damp start, a chilly start. a better afternoon. here's the day planner. need the jacket this morning. lots of readings in the 40s. we'll only be 55 by noon but more sun expected to work its way through the cloud cover by the afternoon. high temperatures making a run toward 60. good morning, everybody. the good news is your nationals are back home in d.c. the bad news is there's no chance of them sweeping the defending champs so thnats must now win two games at home to stay alive. in yesterday's game, jordan zimmerman got the start. we'll start these highlights with him at the plate. two men out. zimmerman sendzs one to right -- sends one to right field. the nats go on the board first. but the day on the mound wasn't nearly as g. he gives up -- as good. he gives up a run. he lasted a season low five
6:24 am
innings. the play of the day comes from john jay running after danny espinoza's fly ball. look at the smash and catch against the wall. cardinals were pumped after that one. they continued to crush the nationals 12-4 the final. that series is now all knotted up at one game a piece. dave owens has more from st. louis. >> reporter: it's supposed to be the strength of the ball club but for the second consecutive day, washington got shaky starting pitching. but unlike sunday when gio gonzalez was able to minimize the damage, today jordan zimmerman not so much. >> i wanted to go out there and go deep in the game. you know, try to get out here with two wins. you know, i didn't do my part. >> they kept pulling on runs. we're never really -- we jumped out ahead 1-0. that was about the story right there. >> reporter: for the third time in four games, st. louis t double digit runs on the nats. how does washington regain that momentum? they'll be at home but can this
6:25 am
young team get it down in maybe the most pivotal game of the year. >> it's easy to play when they're waving the white towels now. hopefully when we get home, our fans are ready for us and, you know, they bring it kind of like they did. >> he's one of the strongest pitchers in the post-season known to this game. >> reporter: biggest game you've had thus far? >> probably so far. >> reporter: how big is game three? well, the winner will have to lose two straight to drop the series. the last time the nats or cardinals have lost two straight, almost a month ago. game three? game on. in st. louis, dave owens, 9 sports. >> thank you, dave. edwin jackson will start game three tomorrow at 1:07 p.m. at nationals park. that's a quick look at sports this morning. i'm kristen berset. have a great tuesday. thank you, chris ten. on the northbound -- kristen. on the northbound side of 95 slow traffic through woodbridge and springfield on to 395. an accident up ahead near the
6:26 am
pentagon was cleared. left some slow traffic there as well. i'll be back with more traffic coming up in a few minutes at 6:30. you're watching 9news now celebrating 19 years of buddy check 9. i want to say congratulations and happy birthday to andrea roane and buldy check 9 on the -- buddy check 9 on the occasion of their 19th year. i want to say what it's meant to me. long before n.f.l. players were wearing pink and people had pink ribbons in board rooms and that sort of thing, andrea roane was raising consciousness about breast cancer. about three or four years ago i found a lump in my own breast and i tended to kind of ignore it but the constant reminders on buddy check 9 sent me finally to check on it. and i want to say something, too, about buddy check 9. it gives you the sense to stay with it. my mammogram was clear. i even had a needle biopsy that was clear and yet when i
6:27 am
actually went and had the lump removed, it turned out to be cancerous. so this whole idea about raising consciousness and women taking their health into their own hands became vital for me. i also want to say for those of you who may be watching october 16 at 10:00 a.m. at the d.c. council, we'll be presenting a resolution on behalf of breast cancer month. all those are invited to come or watch on channel 13. congratulations, andrea. thank you very much.

welcome back. 6:31. your weather first on this tuesday morning. a little damp out here but the steadier rains have let go to just a little bit of drizzle in northwest d.c. our day planner shows encouragement as we head into the afternoon. we're looking at some sunshine returning. 5:00 around 60 degrees. right now a cool, damp 49 with the showers that have been over us for the last several hours leaving some wet streets but they're just starting to pull away. you see a little bit of movement in the last half-hour as we switch it over to the doppler. you'll see there's not too much going on. west of town have a few showers in eastern montgomery county and southern prince george's county, southern anne arundel, calvert and that goes down into charles as well. all moving northeast. low 40s win chester, martinsburg. 49 d.c. 52 the warm spot in annapolis. patuxent river going to about 60. let's check in with monika samtani for a look at time

6:33 am
at 6:43. back to you guys. later today a judge will sentence former penn state assistant football coach jerry sandusky. >> the 68-year-old maintains his innocence following his conviction earlier this year on child sex abuse charges. kristin fisher joins us live from the satellite center with more on what to expect in court. >> reporter: good morning. sandusky's victims are heading into court today hoping for a harsh sentence but sandusky is hoping for a whole new trial, even after he's already been convicted on 45 counts of child sex abuse. just yesterday the former assistant football coach called into the penn state radio station from his jail cell to proclaim his innocence. he said and i quote, in my heart i know i did not do these alleged disgusting acts. sandusky is facing a minimum of ten years and a maximum of more than 400 years in prison. even his own attorneys are predicting a harsh sentence. they say best case scenario is a 30-year sentence. still, listen to how one of
6:34 am
sandusky's attorneys describes his client on the eve of his sentencing. >> he's in an upbeat mood. he wants to move on with this case so he can appeal. he's really been upbeat, surprisingly upbeat knowing what he's facing with a lengthy sentence likely to come tomorrow. >> reporter: yesterday you can see as crews covered the back bans to the courthouse to -- bans to the courthouse to -- entrance to the courthouse to shield the victims expected to testify. about six are expected to testify at today's sentencing starting at 9:00 a.m. expect to hear a state assessment board to report on whether it deems sandusky a violent sexual predator. if so he would have to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life. that is of course if he ever gets out of prison. >> coming later today, andrea mccarren will be live with the latest on the court proceedings. grief counsers will be available to students and staff at woodson high school after a search for a missing fairfax

county teenager ends tragically yesterday. a search team found the body of 17-year-old bryan glenn at thaiss park yesterday. no word yet from police on whether or not this was an apparent suicide or case ever foul play. bryan had been missing for a week. he was last seen at his school. in campaign 2012, a new poll is out and it shows mitt romney is ahead in the race for president following last week's debate. according to the research center, 49% of likely voters favor romney while only 45% like president obama. just last month romney trailed obama by nine points. now he's pulled ahead. governor romney told cadets at the virginia military institute he'll strengthen america's defense as commander in chief. he says president obama has failed to lead on the world stage, especially in the middle east. >> it's clear that the risk of conflict in the region is higher now than when the president took office. >> governor romney said he would work to stabilize the new
6:36 am
governments in libya and egypt and help armed syrian rebels trying to overthrow the assad regime. voters favor president obama when it comes to foreign policy. >> we'll sustain the strongest military the world has ever known. >> neither of the presidential candidates nor their running mates served in the military. this is the first election where that's happened in 80 years. 6:36 now. republican george allen and democrat tim kaine squared off in a debate last night. both men hoping to become virginia's next junior senator. throughout the debate, they each took shots at the other's past performance as governor. when it came to washington, they agreed on one thing. each believe they can fix what's wrong with congress. >> frankly we have a ball and chain and that's congress. congress is holds us back. what we need to do is change congress, especially in two ways. we need people who are more fiscally responsible and we need more people who know frankly the basics about how to
6:37 am
work together. >> if i have the honor of being your senator, i'm going to give all my energies working with people in both parties to create jobs and get mother ascending once again. >> recent polls show that kaine has a slim lead. the candidates are scheduled for one more debate before the november election. my name is kimberly. i'm a 13-year breast cancer survivor and a patient and a half gator at howard university cancer center. buddy check 9 is so important because it covers all aspects of breast cancer from the research being done in the field to the nontraditional and traditional treatment options, for what it means to be newly diagnosed and what it means to be a lock-term breast cancer survivor -- long-term breast cancer survivor. i thank andrea roane and the commitment she's had for fighting breast cancer.
